Mining Projects in Quebec: The Future is Now!

Tuesday, November 21, 2023

Room 304AB - ABB

The mining projects presented at this session are among the most promising in Quebec. They include lithium, gold, graphite, iron-titanium-vanadium and extractive metallurgy. The future of these projects, their level of innovation and the difficulties they will have to overcome will be discussed.

First Phosphate: milestones achieved and next steps (Lac à l'Orignal and Bégin-Lamarche)

Conference details

First Phosphate is a minerals development company dedicated entirely to the extraction and purification of phosphate to produce cathode active material for the lithium-iron-phosphate ("LFP") battery industry. It is committed to producing high purity material in a responsible manner and with a low carbon footprint.

First Phosphate plans a vertical integration from the mine to the supply chains of major LFP battery producers who are looking for battery-grade cathode active material coming from a consistent and reliable source.

The company holds over 1,500 km2 of royalty-free claims that it is actively developing in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Phosphate from anorthosite units is generally of high purity and low in harmful elements.

Focus Graphite: Developing High-Grade Flake Graphite Projects to Provide Superior Quality Graphite for Batteries and Contribute Directly to the Green Energy Revolution

Conference details

The world is on the cusp of a green energy revolution, with renewable energy sources replacing traditional energy sources such as oil, coal and gas. One of the major changes underway is the replacement of fuel-powered vehicles with zero-emission electric vehicles (EVs). These EVs require powerful batteries made from essential materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese and graphite. While more than two-thirds of the battery-grade graphite available today comes from China, and there are no operating graphite mines in the United States, North America needs a secure source of high-purity graphite - and Focus Graphite plans to be that source by developing some of the world's highest-quality flake graphite properties, located in Quebec.

Novador, Development of the Next Project in Val-D’or

Conference details

The Novador gold project is a large-scale, advanced-stage gold development project located in the Val-d’Or mining camp in Quebec, Canada. The project is owned and operated by Probe Gold Inc., a Canadian exploration and development company. The project covers an area of 175 square kilometers and hosts three past-producing mines: Beliveau, Bussiere and Monique along three Gold Trends.

Following the release of the preliminary economic assessment (PEA) completed in 2021, the project went through an extensive drilling program in 2021 and 2022 to expand and improve the classification of the Novador resource estimate. The success of that campaign was proven with the latest 43-101 technical report which presents for the Novador Project mineral resources at 3,793,900 ounces Measured and Indicated (M&I) and 1,179,400 ounces Inferred along the Monique, Pascalis, and Courvan gold trends deposits, representing a 30% increase from the 2021 Mineral Resource Estimate. The M&I ounces increased by 111% compared to the 2021 resource estimate.

In parallel to this large drilling campaign, significant technical and engineering work was performed to advance the project towards development. A program of metallurgical testwork, rock mechanics, geotechnical drilling, geotechnical testwork, hydrogeological characterization, geochemistry was executed while the first year of an extensive environmental baseline study was completed. The project is advancing with an updated PEA targeted for Q1 2024 that will build on the significant data collection and expansion in the mineral resources since 2021. As part of this development work, consultation and stakeholder engagement activities have been ramped up since late 2022, and the Initial Project Description has been submitted to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC), as part of the impact assessment process on October 16th, 2023.

The Novador gold project is one of the most promising gold projects in Canada. In the 2021 PEA, the project was expected to produce an average of 207,000 ounces of gold per year over a mine life of 12.5 years, and this production profile is expected to grow further with the Q1 2024 updated PEA. In addition, the Novador project is expected to come into production when other gold mines in the Abitibi region will have depleted their reserves and thus will help the Abitibi industrial cluster and community to flourish in the next decades.

Sustainable and Responsible Development From Exploration to Mining

Conference details

As part of O3 Mining's sustainable development policy, and in conjunction with ECOLOGO® certification, we will present the basics of responsible development for our mining project. This means constantly integrating ESG best practices into the creation of the Marban Alliance, pushing back industry standards so that our project integrates harmoniously, with maximum positive impact on our host community and minimum effect on the environment.
