The population of Eeyou Istchee Baie-James is primarily distributed among nine Cree Nation communities and five Jamesian municipalities. For nearly 75 years, investments in the mining and energy sectors have profoundly shaped the region. From the development of hydroelectric resources to the advancement of mining projects, these investments have contributed to building infrastructure, developing expertise, and fostering a unique economic ecosystem.
Today, Eeyou Istchee Baie-James is once again at the centre of a major development cycle. Growing demand for critical and strategic minerals, combined with increasing demand for clean energy, is paving the way for new investment opportunities and large-scale projects.
Drawing on the perspectives of a mining company and regional stakeholders, this panel will explore the region’s capacity to prepare for this new wave of investment, seize the business opportunities it will generate, and maximize its long-term benefits for local communities and the regional economy.
The discussion with the panellists will be moderated by Mr. Martin Loiselle, Coordinator, Economic Benefits Maximization, at the Société du Plan Nord.
