Workshop Organizer: The SGA-SEG Student Chapters are nonprofit organizations led by students, aiming to promote the field of economic geology and metallogeny. This training is the result of a partnership between the student chapters of McGill, ULaval-INRS, UQAC, and UQAM.

This workshop will cover the key components of the resource estimation process and the economics of the mining industry. It is aimed at professionals, students and recent graduates in earth sciences or engineering. The workshop will be given in French, however the slides will be in English. This one-day workshop will be divided into four parts covering the following topics:

  1. The importance of the mining industry, the key players, the life cycle of a mine and the Canadian Standards of Disclosure (NI 43-101);
  2. Overview of mineral resource estimation and case studies;
  3. Block model estimation and geostatistics fundamentals;
  4. Mining economics: calculating the value of a tonne of ore and developing a cash flow model (NPV, IRR, payback period).

Participants can bring a laptop that allows basic 3D visualization and the creation of a cash flow model. The computer must be compatible with software such as Excel.
