How can an energy management culture be established in the industrial sector?
Tuesday, November 19, 2024
Room 402 - Ministère de l'Économie, de l'Innovation et de l'Énergie
Energy efficiency is a fundamental aspect of effective industrial energy management. The energy efficiency targets set out in Hydro-Québec’s 2035 Action Plan demonstrate the growing importance of this issue, with an estimated 21 TWh required by 2035. However, the question remains: how should these targets be translated and how can energy be better managed to achieve them? This session will examine potential solutions. Finally, speakers will discuss ways of accelerating the implementation of energy efficiency projects to achieve our energy transition in the industrial sector as quickly as possible.
This session will be offered in French and in English.

Creating an energy management culture: a profitable financial strategy
Conference details
Hydro-Québec's Action Plan 2035 calls on all players in society. As part of this plan, energy efficiency has been identified as one of the key areas for achieving a decarbonized and prosperous Québec. For industrial customers, but also for every category of customer, energy management must become a priority and be put forward before new electricity production facilities are built.
This is a major challenge. Hydro-Québec will be listening to its customers and supporting them in implementing energy efficiency projects through its various financial assistance programs and the support of its specialized sales force.

“PACTE Industrie” a program by ADEME in France: An approach to facilitate decarbonization and energy efficiency of industrial activities
Conference details
The “PACTE Industrie” program is an initiative of ADEME (Ecological Transition Agency) in partnership with ATEE (Technical Association of Energy and the Environment). Launched in June 2023 in France, this program aims to facilitate the decarbonization and energy efficiency of industrial activities.
Here are some key points of the program:
- Funding: The program is allocated around 49 million euros over 3 years to finance training, energy studies and diagnostics as well as support.
- Objectives: Encourage companies to adopt decarbonization and energy efficiency strategies.
- Training and support: Offer training for technical managers and also financial managers, as well as studies and support to prepare the necessary investments.
- Energy Management Systems: Offer a bonus for the adoption of an energy management system such as that leading to certification of the ISO 50001 standard.
The program is aimed at all industrial companies and aims to offer solutions adapted to each industrial site to structure their energy approach in order to carry out concrete, sustainable and profitable energy optimization projects.

High-Purity Iron in Quebec: Combining Energy Management, GHG Reduction and Mineral Resource Optimization
Conference details
In recent years, Quebec's industrial sector has adopted a number of measures to reduce its GHG emissions, mainly through electrification. This is particularly true in the mining sector.
In the case of high-purity iron extraction in Quebec, although significant in absolute terms, GHG emissions represent only 1% of all emissions associated with steel production. Efforts to decarbonize the mining industry are therefore competing with those aimed at concentrate processing activities.
Another factor to consider is the way in which the resource is exploited. Investing in extraction and concentration methods can significantly reduce energy consumption per tonne of high-purity iron concentrate produced.
Using the case of the Bloom Lake site operated by MFQ, the presentation will describe how a mining company can combine energy efficiency, decarbonization of its activities and optimization of the mineral resource extraction to create wealth in Quebec in a responsible manner.
