Stéphanie Somot, who holds a PhD in geosciences, is a research scientist with over 25 years of experience in the field of minerals and the mining industry. Since 2021, she has been conducting research for the Center of Excellence for Strategic Minerals (Elements08) at the Industrial Residues Technology Center (CTRI). Her research focuses on the sustainable and responsible extraction of base, precious, noble, and light metals, particularly those that are critical or strategic, the valorization of industrial minerals and mining and process waters, and the mineral and geochemical characterizations applied to the environment. The materials studied may be primary or secondary resources, radioactive or non-radioactive. Over the years, she has developed expertise in environmental geochemistry and hydrogeochemistry, water treatment, mineral processing, and green hydrometallurgy. She has worked for several public institutions, in close collaboration with the mining industry, most often under confidentiality agreements. She is a volunteer reviewer for several journals and conferences and is a regular member of certain mining and water management associations (CIM-ESRS and IMWA). Dr. Somot obtained her PhD from the University of Lorraine/CREGU-CNRS (Center for Research in Applied Geology and Uranium) in 1997. She worked for two years as a research officer at the University of Quebec in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, as a research associate for eight years in several departments at McGill University (Montreal), and for twelve years as a researcher at COREM, before joining CTRI.
