Gervais Soucy, Ph.D., is a full professor and the director of the Department of Chemical and Biotechnological Engineering at the Université de Sherbrooke. He has worked at the university since 1992. He is co-holder of the Research Chair on the Valorization of Asbestos Mine Tailings. Having trained as a chemical engineer, Soucy is internationally renowned for his work on the applications of thermal plasma technology and various metallurgical processes. His work focuses on emerging metals, including lithium, magnesium, aluminium, vanadium, graphite and rare earths. He has unique expertise in hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical and electrometallurgical processes. He also runs a laboratory that offers characterization equipment essential to the development, understanding and optimization of processes. His areas of expertise include: aluminum electrolysis, lithium hydrometallurgy, magnesium, graphite, the Bayer process, thermal plasma-pyrometallurgy technologies, nanotechnology, economic analysis of projects and management of technological risks associated with hazardous materials.
