Chef Gilbert Dominique

Pekuakamiulnuatsh Takuhikan

After working as Recreation Director for Mashteuiatsh from 1985 to 1994, and then as Director of the Native Games from 1994 to 1997, Mr. Gilbert Dominique was elected to the Conseil des Montagnais du Lac-Saint-Jean in 1997. In 2003, after a second second term as Councillor, he ran for the position of Chief of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh. In May 2006, he was re-elected by acclamation for a four-year term. In 2010, he was appointed General Manager of the Société d’histoire et d’archéologie de Mashteuiatsh, a position he held until 2012. He then became Project Manager for Pekuakamiulnuatsh Takuhikan’s Education and Labour Department. Having been re-elected in May 2013, he returns as Chief of Pekuakamiulnuatsh Takuhikan, the political and administrative organization of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh First Nation. It was during this mandate that Chief Dominique, on behalf of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh, filed a complaint denouncing the underfunding of the PSPPN by governments. Before returning to the position of Chief of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh for the 2021-2025 term, Mr. Dominique was also appointed Executive Director of Innu Takuaikan Ushat Mak Mani-Utenam. In addition to his professional career, Mr. Dominique is recognized for his extensive involvement in the Mashteuiatsh Community. Since his accession to his leadership position in his Community, youth, culture, the economy and recognition of his Nation’s rights have continued to grow in importance. Finally, dialogue, openness and partnership are undeniable hallmarks of his actions.
