{"id":82685,"date":"2019-01-30T12:17:02","date_gmt":"2019-01-30T17:17:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mrnf.gouv.qc.ca\/nos-publications\/removing-thermal-component-heart-rate\/"},"modified":"2019-01-30T12:17:02","modified_gmt":"2019-01-30T17:17:02","slug":"removing-thermal-component-heart-rate","status":"publish","type":"cpt_publication","link":"https:\/\/mrnf.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/our-publications\/removing-thermal-component-heart-rate\/","title":{"rendered":"Removing the thermal component from heart rate provides an accurate VO2 estimation in forest work"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Published in <b>Applied Ergonomics 54: 148-157 <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.apergo.2015.12.005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.apergo.2015.12.005<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Heart rate (HR) was monitored continuously in 41 forest workers performing brushcutting or tree planting work. 10-min seated rest periods were imposed during the workday to estimate the HR thermal component (\u0394<em>HR<sub>T<\/sub><\/em>) per Vogt <em>et al. <\/em>(1970, 1973). <em>VO<\/em><sub>2<\/sub> was measured using a portable gas analyzer during a morning submaximal step-test conducted at the work site, during a work bout over the course of the day (range: 9\u201374 min), and during an ensuing 10-min rest pause taken at the worksite. The<em> VO<\/em><sub>2<\/sub> estimated, from measured HR and from corrected HR (thermal component removed), were compared to <em>VO<\/em><sub>2<\/sub> measured during work and rest. Varied levels of HR thermal component (\u0394<em>HR<sub>T<\/sub><\/em><sub>avg<\/sub> range: 0\u201338 bpm) originating from a wide range of ambient thermal conditions, thermal clothing insulation worn, and physical load exerted during work were observed. Using raw HR significantly overestimated measured work <em>VO<\/em><sub>2<\/sub> by 30% on average (range: 1%\u201364%). 74% of <em>VO<\/em><sub>2<\/sub> prediction error variance was explained by the HR thermal component. <em>VO<\/em><sub>2<\/sub> estimated from corrected HR, was not statistically different from measured <em>VO<\/em><sub>2<\/sub>.
