{"id":82329,"date":"2019-01-30T12:12:24","date_gmt":"2019-01-30T17:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mrnf.gouv.qc.ca\/?post_type=cpt_publication&#038;p=82329"},"modified":"2026-08-04T13:11:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T17:11:50","slug":"group-and-single-tree-selection-cutting","status":"publish","type":"cpt_publication","link":"https:\/\/mrnf.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/our-publications\/group-and-single-tree-selection-cutting\/","title":{"rendered":"Group and single-tree selection cutting in mixed tolerant hardwood-white pine stands: Early establishment dynamics of white pine and associated species"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Published in<strong> The Forestry Chronicle 79(6): 1093-1106<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In mixed tolerant hardwood \u2013 white pine stands of Southwestern Qu\u00e9bec, the effects of group selection cutting on eastern white pine (<em>Pinus strobus<\/em> L.), red oak (<em>Quercus rubra<\/em> L.), yellow birch (<em>Betula alleghaniensis<\/em> Britton) and paper birch (<em>Betula papyrifera<\/em> Marsh.) regeneration are compared to the currently used single-tree selection cutting. The experimental design, initiated in 1998, comprised three cover reduction treatments (circular gap (45 m, 1590 m<sup>2<\/sup>)), 25% and 35% single-tree selection cutting), two scarification treatments (scarified and non-scarified) and two seeding treatments for white pine (seeded and non-seeded). The effect of white pine seed predation was studied in the gaps and the adjacent understory, with exclosures for small mammals. After three years, scarification had a positive effect on white pine, yellow birch and paper birch regeneration but also on aspen (<em>Populus<\/em> spp.) and pin cherry (<em>Prunus pensylvanica<\/em> L.f.) in the three cover reduction treatments. Red oak regeneration was negatively affected by scarification. Shade-tolerant species (sugar maple (<em>Acer saccharum<\/em> Marsh.) and American beech (<em>Fagus grandifolia<\/em> Ehrh.)) tended to be less present in the regeneration gaps than in the single-tree selection cutting.
