The method was validated for drainage basins whose area is less than 25 km<sup>2<\/sup>. Thus, where the area of the drainage basin covers between 25 and 60 km2, the result must be validated in the field by looking for signs indicating the water level reached by the floods of previous years or by establishing a relationship with basins that were measured on the same territory or near it.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/drapeau-texte.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"18\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"disposition\">\n<h2>1<\/h2>\n<h4>Additional information<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Validation of peak flow calculation when the result of this calculation imposes the installation of a conduit with a diameter much larger than the average width of the watercourse.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The methods for calculating peak flows in Schedules 6 and 7 are based on several assumptions, which may make them less suitable for some drainage basins. Sometimes significant differences can be observed between calculated peak flows and flows recorded in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Where the results of flow calculations require the installation of conduits with diameters far greater than the average width of the watercourse observed in the field, it is possible, based on evidence indicating the water level reached by flooding in previous years or by establishing a relationship with basins measured on or near the same territory, to notify the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/gouvernement\/ministeres-organismes\/ressources-naturelles-forets\/coordonnees-structure\/reseau-regional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"management unit in charge\">management unit in charge <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/lien_externe.png\" width=\"16\" height=\"15\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17461 alignnone size-full\" \/><\/a> (in French)\u00a0prior to the installation of a conduit with a diameter less than that determined by the calculation. Supporting documentation submitted by the professional in charge must be submitted (including, but not limited to, calculation of peak flow, average watercourse width, free flow of fish to be insured or not, result of field surveys reflecting choice, identification of inconsistency in flow calculation, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>In this situation, the diameter of the conduit should be consistent with the average width of the watercourse to be crossed. Under no circumstances should the conduit reduce the width of the watercourse by more than 20%, measured at the upper bank limit. The height of water in the conduit must be less than or equal to 85% of the clearance height after it is buried.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Steps in calculation<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Delimitation of the drainage basin;<\/li>\n<li>Calculation of the average slope of the drainage basin;<\/li>\n<li>Identification of the use of the territory and of the surface deposits in the drainage basin;<\/li>\n<li>Calculation of the total area of the basin, of the proportion of each type of surface deposits per land use type and of the percentage of the basin covered by lakes and bare and semi-bare wetlands;<\/li>\n<li>Determination of the watercourse&#8217;s length and calculation of the &#8220;85-10&#8221; slope of the watercourse;<\/li>\n<li>Calculation of the weighted runoff coefficient of the drainage basin;<\/li>\n<li>Calculation of the drainage basin&#8217;s concentration time;<\/li>\n<li>Determination of rainfall intensity;<\/li>\n<li>Calculation of the correction coefficient for rainfall intensity;<\/li>\n<li>Determination of the reduction coefficient for peak flow;<\/li>\n<li>Calculation of the 10-year interval peak flow.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Explanation of the steps to be followed with an example<\/h4>\n<h4>Step 1 &#8211; Delimitation of the drainage basin<\/h4>\n<p>The drainage basin that supplies the watercourse with water at the crossing point is delimited using a topographic map at a scale of<br \/>1: 20 000. Figure 1 shows, as an example, the delimitation of a drainage basin under study.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06a_anglais-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Delimitation of a drainage basin at the crossing point of a watercourse\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06a_anglais-web.jpg\" alt=\"Delimitation of a drainage basin at the crossing point of a watercourse\" width=\"575\" height=\"720\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Step 2 &#8211; Calculation of the average slope of the drainage basin (S<sub>b<\/sub>)<\/h4>\n<p>The average slope is calculated using a grid (1 cm X 1 cm) superimposed on the drainage basin. The number of times each horizontal and vertical line of that grid crosses a contour line must be determined. The length of those lines is also recorded. The calculation made to determine the average slope of the drainage basin under study is given in figure 2.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06b_anglais-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Figure 2 annexe 6 Calculation of the average slope of the drainage basin (Sb)\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06b_anglais-web.jpg\" alt=\"Figure 2 annexe 6 Calculation of the average slope of the drainage basin (Sb)\" width=\"575\" height=\"720\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Step 3 &#8211; Identification of the use of the territory and of the surface deposits in the drainage basin<\/h4>\n<p>With the help of the surface deposit maps, the forest maps and knowledge of the territory, <strong>the use of the lands comprised within the drainage basin must be identified<\/strong>. They may be woodlands, pasturelands or croplands. Then the surface deposits for each land use type must be identified. <strong>Bare and semi-bare wetlands must also be located<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Figure 3 identifies the surface deposits and locates the bare and semi-bare wetlands in the drainage basin under study, which is completely wooded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06c_anglais-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Figure 3 annexe 6 Identification of surface deposits in the drainage basin and location of lakes and bare and semi-bare wetlands\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06c_anglais-web.jpg\" alt=\"Figure 3 annexe 6 Identification of surface deposits in the drainage basin and location of lakes and bare and semi-bare wetlands\" width=\"576\" height=\"620\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Step 4 &#8211; Calculation of the total area of the basin, of the proportion of each type of surface deposits per land use type and of the percentage of the basin covered by lakes and bare and semi-bare wetlands<\/h4>\n<p>In the case of the basin under study, according to figure 3, the results are the following:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ann6_tableauD_anglais-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Example of basin\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ann6_tableauD_anglais-web.jpg\" alt=\"Example of basin\" width=\"711\" height=\"163\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"vertical-align: super;\">1<\/span> Identification of surface deposits and location of lakes and bare and semi-bare wetlands<\/h5>\n<h4>Step 5 &#8211; Determination of the watercourse&#8217;s length (L<sub>c<\/sub>) and calculation of the &#8220;85-10&#8221; slope of the watercourse (S<sub>c<\/sub>)<\/h4>\n<p><strong>The length of the watercourse<\/strong> is measured from the crossing point, following the course of the main watercourse extended to the watershed divide, that is, to the most distant point in the drainage basin determining the longest route a drop of water must travel to reach the crossing point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The &#8220;85-10&#8221; slope of the watercourse<\/strong> is defined as the average slope of the section of the watercourse between 2 points located respectively 10% upstream from the crossing point and 15% downstream from the farthest limit of the drainage basin.<\/p>\n<p>Figure 4 locates the line determining the length of the watercourse (Lc) and figure 5 shows the calculation method for the \u201c85-10\u201d slope of the watercourse (Sc) for the drainage basin under study.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06d_anglais-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Figure 4 annexe 6 Determination of the watercourse length\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06d_anglais-web.jpg\" alt=\"Figure 4 annexe 6 Determination of the watercourse length\" width=\"576\" height=\"720\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06e_anglais-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Figure 5 annexe 6 Calculation of the '85-10' slope of the watercourse (Sc)\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06e_anglais-web.jpg\" alt=\"Figure 5 annexe 6 Calculation of the '85-10' slope of the watercourse (Sc)\" width=\"576\" height=\"464\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Step 6 &#8211; Calculation of the weighted runoff coefficient of the drainage basin (C<sub>p<\/sub>)<\/h4>\n<p>Firstly, using table 1, the various types of surface deposits in the drainage basin are classified on a hydrological basis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ann6_tableauB_anglais-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ann6_tableauB_anglais-web.jpg\" alt=\"Hydrological classification\" width=\"642\" height=\"751\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Note: Type 7 deposits are classified as bare and semi-bare wetlands.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When the hydrological classification of surface deposits is completed, the runoff coefficient for each type of deposit is determined using table 2 based on land use and the average slope of the drainage basin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ann6_tableauC_anglais-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ann6_tableauC_anglais-web.jpg\" alt=\"Runoff coefficients\" width=\"725\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then the weighted runoff coefficient for the drainage basin may be calculated (C<sub>p<\/sub>). Consequently, the first formula must be used.<\/p>\n<p>t<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">c<\/span>\u00a0= (3,26 (1,1 &#8211; 0,24) x 3 600\u00a0<span style=\"vertical-align: super;\">0,5)<\/span>\/1,9\u00a0<span style=\"vertical-align: super;\">0,33<\/span>= 136 minutes<\/p>\n<h4>Step 8 &#8211; Determination of rainfall intensity (I)<\/h4>\n<p>Rainfall intensity is determined using figures 6 and 7.<\/p>\n<p>In figure 6, average total rainfall of a 1-hour duration for the basin under study is indicated by the contour line closest to that basin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06f_anglais-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Figure 6 annexe 6 Isohyet of the average total rainfall (mm) of a 1-hour duration\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06f_anglais-web.jpg\" alt=\"Figure 6 annexe 6 Isohyet of the average total rainfall (mm) of a 1-hour duration\" width=\"575\" height=\"357\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Figure 7 indicates the standard deviation for the total rainfall of a 1-hour duration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06g_anglais-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Figure 7 annexe 6 Isohyet of the standard deviation for total rainfall (mm) of a 1-hour duration\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/annexe06Figureannexe06g_anglais-web.jpg\" alt=\"Figure 7 annexe 6 Isohyet of the standard deviation for total rainfall (mm) of a 1-hour duration\" width=\"575\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The rainfall intensity applicable to the drainage basin is determined as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I = average total rainfall of a 1-hour duration + (1.305 X standard deviation for total rainfall of a 1-hour duration).<\/p>\n<p>In our example, which is located on sheet 21M\/6 N.E., the average is 22 mm\/hour and the standard deviation is 8 mm\/hour. The rainfall intensity applicable to that drainage basin is therefore 32.4 mm\/hour, that is, 22 + (1.305 X 8).<\/p>\n<h4>Step 9 &#8211; Calculation of the correction coefficient for rainfall intensity (Fi)<\/h4>\n<p>Depending on the concentration time of the drainage basin, the correction coefficient for rainfall intensity is calculated using one of the following 2 formulas:<\/p>\n<p>F<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">i<\/span>\u00a0= 12,25\/t<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">c<\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: super;\">0,612<\/span>\u00a0for 10 minutes\u00a0\u2264 t<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">c<\/span>\u00a0&lt; 60 minutes<\/p>\n<p>F<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">i<\/span>\u00a0= 17,07\/t<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">c<\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: super;\">0,693<\/span>\u00a0for t<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">c<\/span>\u00a0\u2265 60 minutes<\/p>\n<p>where:<\/p>\n<p>t<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">c<\/span>: temps de concentration (minute)<\/p>\n<p>In the case of the basin under study, the second formula must be used (tc = 136 minutes).<\/p>\n<p>F<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">i<\/span>\u00a0= 17,07\/136\u00a0<span style=\"vertical-align: super;\">0,693<\/span>= 0,567<\/p>\n<h4>Step 10 &#8211; Determination of the reduction coefficient for the peak flow (F<sub>L<\/sub>)<\/h4>\n<p>The retention zones such as lakes and bare and semi-bare wetlands entail a significant reduction in the peak flow. The reduction coefficient for peak flow is evaluated using the proportion of lakes and bare and semi-bare wetlands calculated at step 4 and figure 8.
