Michel Gamache

Polytechnique Montréal

Michel Gamache holds a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering and a PhD in applied mathematics (optimization) from Polytechnique Montréal. He has been a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal for over 25 years.

He teaches optimization methods to mining and industrial engineering students. He has received a dozen Meritas awards from undergraduate students at Polytechnique Montréal for the quality of his teaching. For over 25 years, his research work has focused on optimizing mining operations in collaboration with the mining industry, including real-time assignment of trucks to shovels in open-pit mines (MineStar project with Caterpillar), optimal short-, medium- and long-term mine planning, and real-time optimal management of mining operations.

He is currently involved in research projects on the analysis of mining operations data (transport time, loading time, drilling time, maintenance, etc.), on short-term planning and optimal, robust scheduling of mining operations, and on the development of digital twins for real-time decision-making. He is currently co-supervising 7 master’s students and 9 doctoral students.
