Joint Research Program on Sustainable Development of the Mining Sector

The Joint Research Program on Sustainable Development in the Mining Sector-III was developed by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT) in collaboration with the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts (MRNF). It is intended for researchers from Québec universities and colleges and its objective is to study the technical, environmental, and technological challenges encountered in Québec’s geological context when developing mineral resources. This initiative promotes cooperation and synergy between scientists and key players in the mining industry and has significant potential benefits for the sector as a whole.

Program I was offered from 2013 to 2018, and Program II from 2019 to 2022. Program III is now available since 2022 and will run until 2025. Results of studies conducted through the 2013-2018 program are available on the FRQNT website Ce lien s'ouvrira dans un nouvel fenêtre., while those obtained during the 2019-2022 program are expected by 2025.

Program-III research areas

The Joint Research Program on Sustainable Development in the Mining Sector-III targets seven research areas:

Area 1: Deep exploration and mining

Area 2: Development of the mining sector in the North

Area 3: Energy savings and greenhouse gases

Area 4: Impact of mining development on the environment and communities

Area 5: Development and optimization of geoscientific and geomatics tools

Area 6: Prospective mining development vision

Area 7: Research on critical and strategic minerals (CSM)

Program-III calls for proposals

Two calls for proposals under the seven research areas were launched in November 2022 and September 2023. The third and final call for proposals for the program-III will be launched in the fall of 2024.

All the information on the various calls for proposals is available on the FRQNT website Ce lien s'ouvrira dans un nouvel fenêtre..
